How to Join a Minecraft Server
A complete step-by-step guide for Java Edition, Bedrock Edition, and console players. Updated for 2026.
Step 1: Find a Minecraft Server
Before you can join, you need a server to connect to. Browse our Minecraft server list to discover active communities. We track live player counts so you can see exactly how many people are playing right now.
Use the filters to find your preferred game mode — Survival, Skyblock, PvP, or any other category. Check the player count, uptime, and community votes to pick a server that fits you.
Step 2: Copy the Server IP Address
Every server has an IP address (like play.example.com) and sometimes a port number (like :25565).
On our server cards, just click the IP text or the copy button to copy it to your clipboard.
Most Minecraft Java servers use the default port 25565 — if the IP doesn't show a port, it's using the default. Bedrock servers typically use port 19132.
Step 3: Open Minecraft
Launch Minecraft on your device. The steps differ slightly depending on which edition you're playing:
- Minecraft Java Edition (PC/Mac/Linux) — installed from the Minecraft launcher
- Minecraft Bedrock Edition (Windows 10/11, mobile, console)
Step 4: Add the Server to Your List
Java Edition (PC/Mac/Linux)
- Click Multiplayer on the main menu
- Click Add Server (or Direct Connection to join once without saving)
- Paste the IP address in the Server Address field
- Give it any name you want (this is just for your server list)
- Click Done, then select the server and click Join Server
Bedrock Edition (Windows 10/11, Mobile, Console)
- Click Play on the main menu
- Go to the Servers tab
- Scroll down and click Add Server
- Enter the server name, IP address, and port
- Click Save or Play to connect
Step 5: Connect and Play
After adding the server, click to join. Minecraft will attempt to connect. If the server is online and you have the correct IP, you'll load into the server's world.
Once connected, follow the server's rules and have fun. Most servers have a spawn area with signs or an NPC explaining how to get started.
Troubleshooting: Why Can't I Connect?
Server is offline
Check the server's status on our site. If it shows offline, the server may be down for maintenance or permanently closed. Wait and try again later.
Wrong Minecraft version
Most servers run a specific Minecraft version. Check the server's version on our detail page and make sure your Minecraft client matches. Use the Minecraft launcher to switch versions.
Firewall or network issues
Your firewall or antivirus may block Minecraft connections. Try adding Minecraft as an exception in your firewall settings. Some school or work networks block game servers entirely.
Server is full
Popular servers have player limits. If the server is at maximum capacity, you'll need to wait. Check the player count on our site to see how many slots are available.
