Minecraft Disconnected by Server — Common Causes
A 'Disconnected by Server' or 'You have been kicked' message means the server closed your connection on purpose. Unlike a timeout, the server answered you — it just decided to drop you. Here are the usual reasons.
Server restart or crash
The simplest cause: the server restarted for an update, or crashed. You'll get dropped and can usually reconnect after a minute. Check the server's status on our live server list to see if it's back.
You were banned
A kick with a reason like “Banned” or a specific rule means a moderator removed you, often permanently. If you think it's a mistake, reach out to that server's staff — bans are per-server, not global.
Anti-cheat flagged you
Many servers run anti-cheat software. Mods, hacked clients, or even some harmless performance mods can trip it. If you're kicked instantly on join with a vague reason, remove unapproved mods and try a vanilla client.
Server is full
Popular servers cap player slots. If it's at capacity you'll be refused entry — watch the live player count before joining so you don't waste the trip. Some servers use a queue instead of a hard kick.
Version or mod mismatch
Joining a 1.21 server on a 1.20 client (or missing a required modpack) can get you kicked. Match the version shown on the server's detail page, or read our guide to changing your Minecraft version.
