Java vs Bedrock Minecraft

Confused about which Minecraft edition to play? Here’s the real difference between Java and Bedrock — and how to choose in 2026.

The Short Version

Java Edition is the original PC version — the most moddable, with the biggest custom-server scene. Bedrock Edition runs on everything else (Windows 10/11, mobile, console) and supports cross-play between devices. They use different codebases, so they don't naturally connect.

Key Differences

Cross-play

Bedrock players on phone, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, and Windows can all play together. Java is PC/Mac/Linux only and does not cross-play with Bedrock.

Mods & Custom Servers

Java has the deepest mod ecosystem (Forge, Fabric, Pixelmon, etc.) and the widest variety of custom servers. Bedrock supports add-ons and marketplace content, but far fewer free mods.

Performance

Bedrock runs smoother on low-end hardware and consoles. Java needs a stronger PC but offers more tuning and shader support.

Redstone & Mechanics

Subtle differences exist (redstone behavior, mob mechanics). Most players never notice, but technical builders care.
